經過幾十年的發展,國外的咨詢業已經成為一個發展迅速的知識型產業部門,被列為高層次知識產權中的重要領域,成立了很多具有很高水平和威望的咨詢公司。美國咨詢業已經相當發達，咨詢領域除工程咨詢外，還包括決策咨詢、技術咨詢、管理咨詢、專業咨詢（會計、法律、稅務、醫藥等等領域，咨詢服務幾乎涉及社會生活的各個方面，而且市場運作規范、專業化程度高、收費合理，已形成相對穩定的咨詢行業與服務體系。美國75%的企業都要請教咨詢公司,日本50%的企業要在咨詢顧問的幫助下改善管理。市場的擴展帶來收入的激增,60年代美國的管理咨詢年收入為10億美元,70年代增長到20億美元,80年代達到50億美元,至今已達到200億美元。在西歐各國也呈現出穩定快速的增長。英國現有各種規模的咨詢企業2000余家，服務范圍按性質可分為工程咨詢、產品與技術咨詢、經營管理咨詢三大類。工程咨詢公司現有900余家，約90種專業；產品與技術咨詢公司約有1000家，共200個專業；經營管理咨詢公司數百家。德國的咨詢業始于50年代，咨詢機構發展迅速，并呈兩極分化趨勢。目前德國已有各種形式的咨詢機構幾千家。日本約有咨詢機構1000多家，主要集中于東京等幾個大城市。

　　我國咨詢業和改革開放同時起步，從1980年開始，由中國企業聯合會（當時為中國企業管理協會）開創了這項工作。由中國企業管理協會牽頭，通過學習與引進國外咨詢研究的理論與方法，結合中國的國情及企業的實際情況，開展企業咨詢研究。根據中為咨詢觀察目前我國咨詢業發展時間非常短，和西方咨詢研究業的發展水平有大的差距?？偸遣荒苄纬蓪I化合作化的集團作戰行為。西方咨詢業已發展到以客戶為軸心提供個性化扎實的服務，而國內咨詢業的人才結構、知識結構還不能承擔國際化復雜的業務，零散資源亟待整合?，F今越來越多的國際咨詢研究公司來到中國開展業務，搶灘中國市場。目前我國共有各類咨詢公司3萬余家，而真正從事咨詢服務業務的僅1500余家，在咨詢業中做大品牌的只有幾十家。我國的咨詢業市場還十分不完善，收集信息的準確率不高，時效性不強，很難為企業提供系統、準確、及時的決策信息。中國目前的管理咨詢還缺乏準確的市場定位，整個行業管理薄弱，咨詢公司小而散，形不成規模，就連在國內咨詢業發展較快的深圳，其咨詢公司的業務主要集中在營銷培訓、品牌培育、產品代理等初級業務，很少涉及企業戰略、信息決策等較高級的咨詢業務。中國咨詢業發展地位特點資料：
