Learn Chinese everyday, know China more!
清明的時間點在公歷每年4月4-6日。清明節又叫踏青節,是中國傳統節日,也是最重要的祭祀節日之一,是祭祖和掃墓的日子。
The festival is called Qīngmíng Jié in Standard (Mandarin) Chinese, literally "Pure Brightness Festival" or "Clear and Bright Festival". The name suggests a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime, but it is mostly noted for it connection with Chinese ancestral veneration and the tending of family graves.
So what will Chinese do during Qingming Festival?
Tomb sweeping 掃墓
It is regarded as the most important custom in the Qingming Festival from which the name of Tomb-sweeping Day is got.
Today, with cremation taking over from burying, the custom has been extremely simplified in cities. Only flowers are presented to the dead relatives and revolutionary martyrs. No matter how respect is shown, good prayers for the deceased are expressed.
Spring Outgoing 踏青
Not only is it a day for commemorating the dead, it is also a festival for people to enjoy themselves. “Spring Outgoing” means going out to appreciate the beautiful scenes of nature. And so Qingming is not just a blue time for remembrance, but also a green time for fun.
Eating Qingtuan 吃青團
Qingtuan is a popular snack in the Yangtze River delta areas. "Qing", or green, comes from the green grass extract in which the dumpling is soaked for a long time. It coincides with the first word of the Qingming Festival and with the color of green - the symbol for spring.
Flying Kites 放風箏
What makes flying kites during this festival special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly free. It is said this brings good luck and diseases can be eliminated by doing this.
