英語中有很多俚語看上去讓我們摸不到頭腦，甚至還鬧出笑話，今天我們來看看幾個常見的俚語究竟是什么意思。

　　注：這個委婉表達屬于美國用法，如果在歐洲這么問，別人可能會直接理解為字面意思。類似的表達還有，Where can I powder my nose? 英式英語中，spend a penny可以作為“上廁所”的委婉語。

　　又及：wash one's hands of something / someone 表示金盆洗手，和某事、某人斷絕關系。

　　注：18世紀50年代，倫敦有一群上流社會的男女在家里以文會友，談論文藝，他們衣著簡樸以示對晚禮服的厭惡。其中有個叫本杰明·斯蒂林費利特的人常穿藍色絨長襪，后來這群人就被稱為“藍長襪俱樂部”或“藍長襪”。此后，bluestocking就用來指附庸風雅或賣弄學問的女人。
